23) Learn To Delegate

The key to any successful pursuit is to learn to work On that pursuit, not In it. We must work in it for a while, to figure out the ins-and-outs, but once you understand how it works and moves, you need to remove yourself from the tedious work of keeping it running, and instead focus on the productive work of how to grow it and get more from it. If you’re not used to leveraging yourself, hiring others, or outsourcing your work yet, I can honestly tell you that making this small mind shift will change everything for you. The sooner you can begin hiring others the better.
If you’re like I was, then I’m sure you don’t necessarily know where to start. In this Foundation of Delegation and Outsourcing I will give you valuable tips and pointers to get you started on this path for yourself.
Oftentimes, we get so inundated with working In our businesses, that we rarely get the chance to work On our businesses and thus grow them to their full potential. This creates frustration, burnout, and prolonged struggle.
The idea is to learn a business, and once you understand how it works, to define a process for it’s procedures. Define all of the individual steps that are required to see every task in a business completed successfully.
From this stage, you simply learn to hire people and put them into positions, learning and completing your processes, and thus you begin to automate your business. You are able to stop working in the processes, and you are freed up to then define more processes and think bigger picture about how to grow your business and get the most from it.
The key is to automate any business and pursuit you have, and thus leverage yourself.
Think about this… how many tasks related to your business, or earning money, are you able to complete in a single productive day? Even if it was your most productive day ever, you are limited to the amount of work you can get done. So if you can remove yourself from the limitations, by outsourcing your tasks and putting people into positions to focus on and complete specific pursuits for you, you then leverage your ability to get work done. You still work hard, and do as many things you can do, but now, instead of it just being you, you are able to focus on the highest yielding tasks, and still ensure that many other necessary tasks are completed each day by people you hire.
I understand that you may be taken aback by the idea of “hiring people” and you may think you aren’t in a place to be able to do that, but the reality is, it’s not that scary, it’s very helpful to you, you will accomplish far more in a day, in a month, in a year than you could ever do by yourself, and you will see far greater return in a day, a month, and a year than you ever imagined.

Leverage:
What does it mean to Leverage oneself?
Let’s look at the definitions of “Leverage” so that we can best understand this concept. The definitions are as follows:
– the increase in force gained by using a lever
– the mechanical advantage or power gained by using a lever.
– power or ability to act or to influence people, events, decisions, etc.; sway

Understanding this, we look at leverage then, as a way to increase your own output and production by using others. Learning to manage people, to delegate tasks, and to remove yourself from the direct work involved in accomplishing task will free you up to work on business, not in business, and that is where real results and success get amplified. Think about it, if you can amplify the work that gets done, of course you can amplify the results you get.

So how do you go about leveraging yourself, and what are the first things to think of? This is what I delve headfirst into in this Foundation of Success.

How Can Outsourcing Help:
Let me illustrate a few examples of how outsourcing work can bring you incredible results in your life.
2,340 hours are typically worked by a person in a year. Imagine how much work gets done; how much progress made in an entire year’s worth of work. Imagine how much building is accomplished and success gained from one well directed worker working 9 hours a day, 5 days a week, 52 weeks a year for a total of 2,340 hours. In a years time, immense results are accomplished, and whole businesses can be built.

Now, Imagine if you could still put in your own 2,340 hours in a year, but you only focus on the most important tasks related to your pursuits. I know you can’t currently do that because there are so many other things that need to get done to keep a machine well oiled and moving. But think if you could ensure that all low level tasks get accomplished at the same time that you solely focus on high level tasks! Imagine if you also begin paying a handful of virtual assistants $3.00 an hour to accomplish all of your tasks and having their combined work totaled up to 2,000 some hours. You would pay somewhere around $6000.00 to have them accomplish an extra year’s worth of work for you. What could be accomplished between two full years worth of work going into one year? Are you beginning to see the possibilities?
How much money do you make in a year? How much do you make in two years? If you could fit two years worth of work into one year, do you think you could increase your income? And if it only costs you around $6,000 to outsource a whole year’s worth of work, do you think that you’ll make more than $6,000 profit from that extra work? Now your eyes should be opening and your brain should be in gear.
What can you have accomplished for you, at a relatively low cost, that can greatly increase your income and return?

This concept of Outsourcing your work and hiring Virtual Assistants is something you should get trained on and invest yourself in. If you want a great place to really understand this concept, I would suggest reading Timothy Ferris’ “The Four Hour Work Week,” and that will give you an excellent start, as well as delving into the full Foundation of Leverage and Outsourcing to learn more.
What are you waiting for? Find some people to hire and work with. Put them to work on your brilliant ideas that you’ve been “saving for a rainy day.” Why? Get them started now, put people on them, automate the process, and watch your success multiply by leaps and bounds! Have multiple assistants tag team tasks with well thought out goals and directions and limitations. Give them guidelines and turn them loose.

Non-productive Tasks:
What activities do you frequently do, that need to get done, but that don’t really contribute much to your financial gain?
*Identify the areas in your life where you waste time. You need to get these things done, but they aren’t overly productive for you, or they don’t immediately lead to the biggest return on time invested for you. These are the things you should outsource, so that your time is freed up to focus on the most important tasks. Remember Eat That Frog, and your Ultimate Definite Purpose. Do the most important task first, and only do the tasks that advance you to your ultimate definite purpose.

Managing:
As you learn to outsource your time to VA’s or employees, you’ll need to really focus on managing and learning how to manage effectively. It can be nerve racking at times, to lead a team of people to success, but when boiled down to it’s simplicity, there’s really a great starting point for you that will lighten your journey.
For managing, be clear about your three most important tasks. Then, be very clear with what the other people are supposed to be working on and what their three most important tasks are.
The more that everyone has clarity and can work on their three most important tasks, the more that gets done and the more that they stay on track and don’t lose sight of what needs to get accomplished. You free people up from doing less important tasks and the little things, so that they can do the most important thing that will bring the greatest reward.
Your job is to stay as focused as possible on your 3 most important tasks, and then keep your “employees” focused on their three most important tasks.
They should never be wondering what to do, because they look to A, B, or C to complete tasks that need to be done. Therefore, they feel useful and productive, they also feel self lead, and they appreciate and respect that you’ve clearly laid out their guidelines and path.

Conclusion:
Learning to leverage yourself is simply a process whereby you multiply your strength, ability, and output by utilizing others. Success comes much more quickly when you learn to work ON your business rather than IN your business. Indentify the things that you do which are crucial for you to be involved in and that bring the highest reward for your time spent, and likewise identify the things that you do which you could easily turn over to someone else if they had the proper training.
Then, you go train someone. First, train yourself. Pay attention to every single thing you do, how you do it, and why you do it. Also pay attention to why you don’t do certain things. Clearly write out your process in a step by step guide. Give the Do’s, the Don’ts, and all of the If This Happens Then Do This areas.
Once you have a clearly defined process that is simple to follow, set out to hire someone to take over that area of your business. Your time is valuable, so realize that if you free up your own time to focus on the value giving priorities in your company, those tasks that have the greatest return for you, then you’ll be increasing your income and business. You time is worth a certain amount per hour. Don’t do tasks that produce less than that hourly amount. In fact, pay someone less than you are worth to do all of the things that need to be done which don’t earn you “X” number of dollars per hour.
Once you begin to hire people, either employees or virtual assistants, your work life will change. You’ll begin to see so much more work getting accomplished while you focus on more and more important tasks. This is how to build a great business and find success. Hire people and learn to be a great manager to them.
If you can give your employees their 3 most important tasks, and likewise define your own, and keep everyone on track of consistently pursuing and completing their major tasks, you’ll win. Then, all that is left for you to do is remove the bottlenecks, automate everything as much as possible, and you’ll begin to experience freedom in your work like never before.
