Charity – Foundations Of Success 18

18) Charity

Be a Giver and not a Taker in this world. Add value with your life and with everything you do.
Ask yourself now, before you have found your greatest successes in life, what kind of person do you want to be? Do you want to be someone who is respected, well-liked, kind, caring, and considerate, or do you want to be arrogant, brash, spiteful and greedy?
If you determine now to be a man who ads value to life and gives back what he gets, you will have a legacy that lasts. Not only that, but in the day to day, you will feel valuable and experience a taste of your worth, because you will be actively adding value and worth to those around you. You will inspire people to grow, to learn, to improve, to love more. Be a role model.
In the Foundation of Charity, you will come to understand that charity is many things. It is important to give of your money, and it is also equally important to give of yourself

There are immediate needs in life, and there are long-term needs. There are many times in life when giving your money is appropriate. Indeed I have decided to give 10% of all I make to God as the firstfruits of my labor. I believe that God blesses those who bless his Kingdom, but even aside from the blessings I get back, I believe it is important to give and to contribute back to the needs of life and others.
While everyone is able, not everyone will find success in life. That’s a sad fact of the world we live in. Out of this, we who find success should take it as our ability to correct some of the pain and wrong in the world. It’s not that we must, no-one should force our hand, but it is truly a blessing to be able to help those less fortunate. There is honor, glory, and wonder for those who choose to give from what they’ve been given. That is the type of person I wish to be in life. What about you?
Let’s go back to the concept of immediate needs vs. long term needs. If you have money, and you find someone in need of a meal, giving them knowledge of success does not fill their stomach, but your money will. Give freely. Help the immediate needs in the world.
But even more-so, work to fix the long-term needs. That same person will need another meal and another handout every few hours and they will never break free of their poverty if they aren’t shown how.
They remain a burden to other’s success then and that is most unfortunate for all. Teach them how to succeed, how to find their self worth, how to break their cycle of poverty and hunger. Teach them how to add value to the world around them. No doubt knowledge, mixed with kindness, will change the world.

I know you are aware of the saying… we all know the saying: “If you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. If you teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime.” It is better to teach men to fish. But if they have no strength to concentrate, to focus, to cast, then feed them first. Then, when their mind is off their stomach and the immediacy of hunger, show them that they ought to and certainly can feed themselves for a lifetime.

Give of your money:
Do you remember our Foundation on What to Do With A Dollar? What will you do with your’s? It has failed no man to give generously. If we all learned to give, the government wouldn’t need to impose upon its people social programs that tax and burden the rich and those who are finally succeeding. If we all contributed and taught those less fortunate, we could see a dramatic shift in our social structure. People should not survive on handouts of financial benefit, but rather should learn to survive on handouts of knowledge, of ideas, and of innovation, and then their subsequent action. Teach men how to fish and thus feed them for a lifetime, but be willing to feed them for a day as well, because sometimes, to some people, today is all that matters.

Give of your time:
Find things you love, and give your time to teach others.
There are so many hurting in this world because there is no-one to meet their simplest needs. There are likewise so many in this world who have brilliant ideas to change the world and meet others’ simplest needs. But there are often too few to contribute, and many a good idea burns itself out before it’s light is ever cast onto the world. The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few.
Be a laborer. Go give of yourself to a cause that will impact many. Go give of your time to a cause that you view as a worthwhile endeavor to bring good to your community. You don’t have to over-commit yourself, but we should all give a little of our time, consistently, to causes we deem worthy.
Think of the problems that could be fixed in this world if the many did a little.

Give of your skills and abilities:
You have so many skills and abilities in life, and I’m betting that you rarely get to employ them all consistently. How unfortunate that the world rarely gets to see your skills and abilities put into action. How unfortunate for you that you rarely get to exercise the gifts you love. Learn to employ your favorite skills and abilities in some way to add value to your family, to your community, to your industry. Seek to give more of yourself in every way you can. Go above and beyond, go the extra mile both in your career and with those in your life. You will be rewarded 100 fold and with dividends.
The only way for you to get more is to give more. And you have to give first. Put in extra effort. Employ your best and give all that you have. The world will benefit first, and you will benefit second, but in greater amounts. All around you will repay you for giving your best

Give of your knowledge:
Learn to be a teacher. There is nothing better that you can give than your knowledge. Don’t let it remain stagnant in you. Find someone to mentor, and find people to teach. You have gained valuable knowledge throughout your life. Learn to pass that knowledge along to many others. By doing this, you not only grow in that knowledge yourself and perfect it within yourself, but you also become an inspiration and a role model.
You will change lives, and that effect, multiplied through time, will change the world. You have no idea what teaching a single person your valuable knowledge can do, let alone teaching hundreds.
Do you know that the Dead Sea is dead because there is only an inlet to it, but no outlet. We are the same. If you are learning, but not pouring out, you will grow stagnant inside. Learn to be a wellspring of knowledge, life, beauty, and joy. Teach others so that the whole of society may improve and find success. This also comes back to you.

Conclusion:
You get the best of life when you are a giver and not merely a taker. We all have an inherent desire to be valuable to our communities and spheres of influence. And you become valuable by giving, not by taking. If all a person does is take and consume, there is no value in that. But if a person gives of themselves, of their time, of their resources, of their skills, ability, and knowledge, then they provide value. They give back part of what they have received, ensuring that others will continue to invest in them, and the cycle continues.
There is so much pain, injustice and suffering in this world, much of it due to incredibly simple needs that aren’t being met. If we, We who will be Successful, would make a point to give part of what we get, in all aspects of ourselves, ho much good could we do? How much suffering could be solved? How much knowledge could be spread?
Therefore, I encourage you to be a giver and to thus change the world. It’s important that we all find a few simple causes that we believe in, and then seek to support those causes with our finances, our time, our efforts, and our skills. Having an impact is what makes life worthwhile. Go and be the salt of the earth.
